Toyota Hawaii is inviting Hawaii student artists 15 years and younger to create a drawing of “Your Dream Car” for Toyota Hawaii’s 2014 Dream Car Art Contest. Original, hand-drawn entries must be submitted by Jan. 31 to any Toyota dealer statewide or mailed to Toyota Dream Car Art Contest, P.O. Box 2788, Honolulu, HI 96803-2788. Entry forms and rules are available online now at ToyotaHawaii.com and at all Toyota Hawaii dealerships. One winner could receive a trip to Japan to participate in the Toyota Motor Corp. world competition, while Hawaii finalists will receive an iPad Mini with retina display or cash. New this year, Toyota Hawaii will award five teachers throughout the state a $250 gift card for art materials and supplies.

Entrants are encouraged to create their “dream car” with one of the following themes in mind: conservation/environmentally friendly vehicles, automobiles that promote world peace or concept cars that encourage helping others.

All eligible artwork will be automatically entered into the People’s Choice Competition where family, friends and fans of the Toyota Hawaii Facebook page will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite entries Feb. 17 to March 9. Voters are encouraged to vote daily and each vote will be automatically tallied. The artwork with the most votes in each age category at the end of the competition will be entered for final judging in the local competition.

Palea is JROTC
cadet for October

Kealakehe High School’s Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps has selected Precious Palea its October cadet of the month. Palea is a freshman and a member of the color guard.

Palea was chosen out of nearly 100 cadets to become the cadet of the month.

Kealakehe High sets council meeting

Kealakehe High School’s Community Council meets from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the school’s staff cafeteria dining room. Parents, students and community members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

College offering information session

Hawaii Community College will conduct an information session from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Kanu o ka Aina Public Charter School, 64-1043 Hiiaka St., Waimea. Dinner will also be served.

Taniguchis set up endowed scholarship
at pharmacy school

Dr. Ronald Taniguchi and his wife, Alice, have made a $25,000 pledge to fund an endowed scholarship to support third- and fourth-year students at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Recipients will be high school graduates from Kauai, Molokai and Lanai, and have demonstrated leadership skills and a commitment to community service.

Ronald Taniguchi served in leadership roles at two of the largest health care organizations in Hawaii — Kaiser Permanente and Hawaii Medical Service Association. He capped a 40-year pharmacy career as a faculty member at the UH-Hilo College of Pharmacy where he served as the director of community partnerships from 2008 to 2011.

Alice Taniguchi earned her bachelor of science in nursing and master of public health degrees from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and was the first nurse certified diabetes educator in Hawaii.
